Temperatures soared?across?the Midwest on Thursday, reaching a blistering 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 Celsius) in?St. Louis, and possibly causing two deaths in?KansasCity,?Missouri, as a massive?heat?wave pressed eastward from the Rockies.

In?Kansas?City, where the temperature rose to 105 (40 C), the city health department said two deaths were being investigated to determine if they were?heat-related.

A massive high-pressure system over the Midwest caused triple-digit temperatures in?Chicago?and several other cities. The oppressive?heat?is expected to linger for several days.

The searing?heat?presented a challenge for the?St. Louis?Zoo, which provided misting machines, large fans and cooling stations for visitors and took steps to cool down the animals.

"When it gets hot like this, we like to take a bone and freeze it into a big block of ice then throw it into a pool where the big cats can play with it," said?Jack Grisham, who heads the zoo's animal collection. "We'll freeze bananas and oranges and throw them to the primates as well."

Hill City,?Kansas, which has been the hottest spot in the nation for five days, reached 108 (42 C) Thursday afternoon, the?National Weather Service?said. The thermometer hit 115 (46 C) on Wednesday in the?northwest Kansas?farm community.

"It feels like you have a big old furnace blowing in your face," said?Rayson Brachtenbach, a technician at Elliott Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning and Electric in Hill City.

Brachtenbach said the hot weather kept the company busy repairing air conditioning systems.

A city in the Midwest having the nation's high temperature for five days in a row is very unusual, said?Chris Foltz, a weather service meteorologist in?Goodland,?Kansas.

"It's what you expect in the desert of?Nevada?or?California," Foltz said.

Sustained heat

Drought conditions have contributed to the early and sustained?heat?this summer, said?Alex Sosnowski, expert senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com.

"A lot of these places haven't had a lot of rain, and dry soil contributes to?heat," Sosnowski said, when asked why the high temperatures are being seen so early in the summer. "The sun's energy doesn't go into evaporating moisture, so it heats the ground and that heats the air. It takes a really big rainfall event to bust a drought like this."

Though scattered thunderstorms are expected to dial down the?heat?in the Midwest on Friday, Sosnowski does not see anything that would make much of an impact in dry areas.

The weather conditions have contributed to?Colorado?wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes. The?heat?and drought conditions also are damaging crops. U.S. corn prices have soared 17 percent this month as the hot dry weather persists in the main growing area of the Midwest.

Farther to the east, it was 102 (39 C)in?Cincinnati?and 103 (39 C) in?Nashville,?Tennessee.

"It's when you stop sweating and you get goose bumps that you worry," said?Sean Lachendro, one of a trio installing fiber-optic line for?T-Mobile?along a south?Nashville?roadside.

In?Chicago, the high temperature reached 100 degrees (38 C) for the first time in seven years. Summer school was closed Thursday for 10?Chicago?public schools without air conditioning.

In?Indiana, burn bans are in effect in 74 of 92 counties, and 45 counties have restrictions on shooting off fireworks.

With temperatures soaring, officials from?Kansas?to the?Carolinas?asked residents to take steps to stay cool and check on friends and neighbors. In Birmingham,?Alabama, police were checking on the sick and elderly.

Apple wins again: Court orders ban on US sales of Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone

For the second time in a matter of days, Apple was granted a temporary injunction by a US court banning sales of a Samsung mobile device - this time the Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

On Friday US judge Lucy Koh granted Apple a preliminary injunction against the sale of Samsung?s Galaxy Nexus smartphone. Last week the same judge handed down a ban on sales of Samsung?s Galaxy 10.1 Tab inside the US.

Apple and Samsung have been at each other?s throats since April last year, battling it out over alleged patent infringements in courts around the world. Apple claims that the Korean electronics maker ?slavishly? copied a number of features of its iPhone and iPad mobile devices in the design of its own products, such as the Galaxy tablet and Nexus smartphone. Samsung has hit back at Apple with patent-related accusations of its own.

Friday?s ruling in a California court centered on a lawsuit filed by Apple in February claiming Samsung infringed a patent relating to the Siri voice-activated virtual assistant found on the iPhone, specifically US Patent No. 8,086,604, for a ?universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system.?

The Android-powered Galaxy Nexus, which was developed by Samsung and Google, hit the market late last year and is the search giant?s flagship smartphone.

Speaking during Friday?s ruling, Judge Koh said, ?Apple has made a clear showing that, in the absence of a preliminary injunction, it is likely to lose substantial market share in the smartphone market and to lose substantial downstream sales of future smartphone purchases and tag-along products.?

Friday?s injunction is subject to Apple paying a $96 million bond, substantially more than last week?s $2.6 million bond, but still peanuts to one of the world?s biggest companies. The purpose of the bond is to protect against damages suffered by Samsung if the ruling is later found to have been wrong.

The temporary injunction will at some point be the subject of a court trial, where it will either be made permanent or thrown out. As things stand today, Apple will be more than happy with the way things are progressing, while lawyers at Samsung will be looking at whether they have any chance of overturning Friday?s decision.

The road to smartphone dominance in a fast-growing market now worth billions of dollars is clearly a long, as well as costly, one.

Unrequited Love (Part 2 of 2): Stuck Between Friend and Friendlier

In Part 1, my teenaged self confessed a long-time crush to a friend. Sometimes these situations can blossom into satisfying romantic relationships if both friends are harboring feelings for each other, but if the person who wants more (confessor) admits this to a desired friend who is uninterested (rejector), the two friends must deal with the resulting emotional fallout in their friendship.

The same researchers did a new follow-up study to uncover the specifics of how these friends behaved toward each other after the confessor had been rejected.¹?It turns out that particular types of verbal and nonverbal behaviors in the friends? interactions were indeed linked to whether or not the friendship ended.

Thus, would a confessor be left doggedly singing, ?Hopelessly, I'll love you endlessly...but I won't give you up,? like in the Muse song ?Endlessly,? or would a confessor take a more final cue from Garbage?s song ?Cup of Coffee? with ?No, of course we can?t be friends, not while I?m still this obsessed...this is how our story ends???

One can?t force rejectors to change their feelings, just as confessors can?t simply turn off their ill-fated attraction.? For anyone asking ?What do I do now?? we present some helpful tips below.

Five Ways to Save Your Friendship after a Romantic Confession (for both rejectors and confessors):

Verbally affirm that the friendship is important and you want to stay friends.
Say that you are okay with the confession/rejection and you accept that the other person doesn?t feel the same.
Return to your previous patterns of social contact sooner rather than later ? this demonstrates acceptance of the outcome and you won?t appear to be avoiding the other.
Talk about new romantic interests that you develop in other people. This way, the confessor takes pressure off the rejector, and the rejector avoids building false hope in the confessor.
Decrease (or not increase) previous levels of flirting, innuendo, and touching.

Additionally, the confessor can avoid talking about how the rejector doesn?t feel the same and accept the rejector?s future romantic partners, while the rejector can show understanding for the confessor?s feelings.

A friendship is more likely to end if:

The two friends avoid social contact with each other. (It?s hard to be friends with no contact, right?)
The confessor complains about or doesn?t accept the rejector?s decision.
The rejector suggests that mutual romantic feelings could develop someday or that a relationship isn?t possible because the rejector is already interested in someone else.
The rejector tells others about the confessor?s feelings and the confessor finds out.

Let?s say Sam confesses his undeniable attraction to Pat. Pat, who has never had anything beyond platonic feelings for Sam, tries to let him down nicely with, ?I?m sorry, Sam. I like someone else right now, but maybe someday I might feel the same.? Sam is hurt, of course, and can?t help bringing the subject up again and again.? Feeling uncomfortable, Pat begins ignoring Sam?s calls and avoiding events that Sam might attend. Pat even asks their mutual friend, ?Is Sam going to be there? I?ve felt really awkward around him since he told me he liked me.? This tidbit circulates among their group of friends, and Sam feels embarrassed and betrayed when he hears about it. Based on this research, Pat and Sam would have a slim chance of continuing their friendship in the future.

Readers should be aware that the above tips are just suggestions and that results may vary. Individual situations call for individual solutions.

Florida Blue reacts to health care ruling, will continue push to reach consumers

At Florida Blue, the Supreme Court?s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act means the increased focus on reaching consumers will continue.

Florida Blue changed its name from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Inc. earlier this year in an effort to reach more consumers.

?There?s definitely a lot of opportunity, and we have to approach it in the right manner,? said Jon Urbanek, senior vice president of sales and marketing for employer markets for Florida Blue.

There are estimates that 3 million more people in Florida will be entering the health insurance market under the Affordable Care Act.

Urbanek said Florida Blue will also be looking to build better relationships with providers to improve patients? outcomes by negotiating incentives to promote quality care.

?We?re going to shift into more of a quality or value-based reimbursement,? Urbanek said. ?We need to agree on key quality things physicians should be doing, and help them with the information and provide them with incentives.

?We need to be working with the providers,? Urbanek said. ?We?re not going to get any further with hospitals, doctors and health plans beating each other up over rates. We need to start working together.?

Microsoft reportedly plans Windows 8 upgrades all the way from XP, wants us to just let go of the past

Microsoft has been promising a cheap-and-cheerful upgrade path to Windows 8 for those who buy new PCs. But what about that five-year-old PC in the basement? If the historically well-connected Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet is right, the upgrade path will go further back -- much further. Although upgraders will still want Windows 7 if they need to carry over absolutely everything, tipsters claim that settings can transfer from releases as old as Windows Vista SP1. Those with truly ancient PCs (we're looking at you, corporate customers) can even bring over personal files from an OS as dated as Windows XP SP3. Like we saw last time around, some of the 7-to-8 upgrade rules are a bit Byzantine -- 7 Professional users can't step down to the non-Pro Windows 8 release, for example, and it's equally verboten to change language editions or move from 32- to 64-bit code without a full-scale reinstallation. The extra-long olive branch will be slightly unusual for Microsoft if it's confirmed, but then the company is also trying to move along a user base that in some cases has clung to XP for more than a decade. Redmond is no doubt eager to get rid of our dependency issues.

Sky-divers drop from blimp to demo Google Glass eyewear

Google co-founder?Sergey Brin turned up at the I/O keynote in San Francisco Wednesday, and revealed that a trio of basejumpers were hanging out in a blimp overhead. Brin's instructions: Jump out of the airship, land on the roof of the Moscone Center, and deliver a box containing a pair of the augmented-reality?glasses.?

Because this didn't seem complicated enough, Brin asked for mountaineers to rappel down the walls of the center, then hand off the package to cyclists, who rode into the auditorium, as you can see in the video released late Wednesday:

It was a pretty crazy stunt, though one that didn't reveal much about Google Glass except that it stays on during extreme sports, will come in a variety of styles, and weighs less than a standard pair of sunglasses.

It was also revealed that Google will allow attendees of this week's conference to pre-order a version of Google Glass for $1,500. This model will be a rough edition, not the final product, and is intended for serious developers only.

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) ? Officials say there was an explosion at a beer garden in Nigeria's northeast that wounded nine people.

Bauchi state police chief Mohammed Ladan said an improvised explosive device went off late Sunday in the city of Bauchi.

Nigerian Red Cross official Adamu Abubakar said a three-month-old baby is among the wounded.

The blast came two days after an explosion went off near a popular nightclub in the capital Abuja, but left no one hurt.

The attacks come amid growing violence blamed on a radical Islamist sect in Africa's most populous nation.

The sect known as Boko Haram wants Islamic Shariah law? which opposes the consumption of alcohol? imposed across Nigeria, a nation of Muslims and Christians.

A trio of beer garden attacks last year killed 25 people in the sect's spiritual home of Maiduguri.

It's an understatement to say that Seagate started off on the wrong foot in its attitude towards solid-state drives: the company only slowly came around to embracing flash memory, and then mostly for the enterprise crowd and hybrid drive lovers. A newly-struck partnership between Seagate controller maker DensBits is signalling a more serious attempt to offer SSDs to everyday users. Along with catering to the business folk, Seagate wants its new teammate's help on building "low-cost, high-performance" consumer SSDs. How to Be Productive | One Organized Business

Business and workplace experts extol the benefits of productivity on a regular basis. I agree with them ? being productive is key to starting, running, and growing a successful business. But how can you be productive? If you?re taking things as they come and feeling like you?re stuck on a hamster wheel, try the following productivity boosting strategies:

Work during YOUR peak times

If you think you?re operating on all cylinders all the time, thank again. We each have times where we?re naturally more focused and more energetic. Some people are night owls by nature. Others thrive in the morning. My best time is about an hour or two after I wake up and get moving around. So, if I?m working from home, I exercise after waking up. If I?m traveling to the office or to a client, I?m set to go once I reach the end of my commute. My worst time? After lunch, no question. I get my second wind later in the afternoon, but that hour or two after lunch are just no good.

Remove distractions

Close your office door. Turn off your cell phone. Close your email inbox. Do whatever you have to do support yourself in being productive. I turn off my cell phone for a few hours each day. And some days, it?s even off all day. Same goes for my iPad and its numerous notifications, which I do want ? just not all the time. If you stop acting like everything is urgent and important, you?ll see which things really are.

Block out times to get things done

I call this ?scheduling private work sessions.? Block off time to work on important projects or tasks and honor the schedule you create. If you don?t, other people certainly won?t.

Ask for help ? and learn how to delegate

Trying to do everything yourself will only run you ragged. If someone has the expertise that you need, ask them how to do something ? or delegate and have them do it for you. It?s definitely empowering to learn something new and do it yourself, but there isn?t always time for that and it isn?t always necessary. Save yourself some time (and yes, even money) by enlisting the help of others. Savvy business owners know that they reap the biggest rewards from focusing on the things they do best.

IHSAA Creates 6A Football Class, Sets Format For Moving Schools In Classes

INDIANAPOLIS (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The Indiana High School Athletic Association has created a 6A class for football and established criteria for moving schools up in class in all sports.

The IHSAA Board voted 13-5 to create Class 6A in football effective with the 2013 season, taking the top 32 schools in enrollment statewide out of Class 5A to create it.

The schools moving to 6A locally according to the latest enrollment figures would be Northrop, Homestead, Warsaw, and Snider.

Remaining in 5A as part of the next 32 in enrollment are Carroll, Huntington North, South Side, North Side, and Wayne.

5A and 6A will in the new system have a bye week at the end of the regular season and begin sectional playoff action with semifinals, while the other four classes continue to play quarterfinal games.

In addtion, the IHSAA voted 16-2 to create a two year period for all sports in which teams would accumulate points that could move them up a class with success in competition.

Teams would get one point for a sectional title, two for a regional championship, three for winning a semi-state, and four for being a state champ.

If a team accumulates six points in this system over a two year period, it would be moved up a class for the next two years.

Magical Kaapsehoop Mpumalanga South Africa

WARNING -DO NOT VISIT IF YOU DISLIKE -Wild horses, Forests to walk in, Beathtaking views and friendly locals.

Upon arriving at Lambourne's cottage in Kaapsehoop Mia asks "Mommy is this where Faeries live ?" Not a far fetched question considering that I myself keep expecting Tinker to fly by. This is a magical garden filled with Birds, Butterflies,Ladybirds,Rock Dassies and the most gorgeous array of flowers. Even spiders look less scary here, for any of you that have watched the childrens movie 'Charlotte's web' you will know what I mean, they are too beautiful to be scary in this setting.

Mia is in the garden playing with her tea set and her imaginary (or not ) fairies , Nino is up on the rocks playing hide and seek with the Dassies and Damien is off on a hike to the escarpment. Me? Where am I you ask? I am in the Kitchen getting dinner ready while sipping on a gorgeous glass of Merlot. I want to cook in this kitchen! Who wouldn't with a view like mine out the kitchen window.

We awake to a beautiful day full of promise and head out on a hike to the

waterfall, not for the faint hearted or unfit BUT well worth it, we drink from the crystal clear steams as we move along and once down at the waterfall we bring out the food and drink and enjoy a tasty lunch.

After the long hike we head back into town with a Stop at the Bohemian restaurant where I enjoy a much needed "Mustang cocktail (giner beer based)" which is made locally.

That evening we are all off to bed early and the next morning decide to start off the day with the famous pancakes from Koen 'N Pan. It could be the view or fresh mountain air but the EVERYTHING here tastes better!

We spend our week hiking,horse riding ,eating ,drinking and being VERY MERRY!

Before we head off Mia does one last walk through the garden to bid farewell to her new friends and outside I find Nino saying a sad farewell to a wild horse that has been kind enough to let us share this amazing mountain with him.

Visting Kaapsehoop and staying at Lambourne's specifically has made me realise just how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful country.

Anyone visting Mpumlanga should include Kaapsehoop on the itinerary!

A truly breathtaking experience

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's convictions on 45 child sex abuse counts will send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Jurors announced the verdict Friday night after weighing 48 charges accusing him of abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period.

Sandusky has been led away to jail in handcuffs.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola says Sandusky is disappointed by the verdict. Many of the charges carry mandatory minimum sentences that will keep the 68-year-old Sandusky behind bars for decades. Amendola calls it a "life sentence."

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly is thanking the accusers who testified, calling them "brave men."

She says the trial was forced on them and that she hopes the verdict "helps these victims heal ... and helps other victims of abuse to come forward."
