YouTube Japan adds new 'original content' channels: trains, horror and drawing on faces

YouTube Japan rolls in new 'original content' Trains, horror and drawing on faces

We've seen our fair share of out-there Japan TV programming -- and that looks likely to increase. YouTube has struck a deal with 13 companies that will add original shows and videos to the constantly-growing Japanese library, new videos promised daily. There's a pretty broad array of partners, with a slight focus on comedy and pop-culture, which should mean a shorter language hurdle for us occasional global viewers. Into high-speed trains? There's a whole channel dedicated to the Land of the Rising Sun's unsung tech export. We've got Catherine The Thirteenth (computer-generated chat show host, obviously) discussing the convenience of iPads after the break, but if we had a say in future channels, it'd throw in more mechanized beetle tanks and robot hotplate chefs.

Treece family named 2012 Adoptive Family of the Year | Beech Tree ...

Marty and GeorgeAnn Treece were named the Adoptive Family of the Year for 2012 for the Two Rivers Region. They were recognized at an Adoption Reception in Frankfort on November 1, 2012.? November is adoption awareness month.?

Marty and GeorgeAnn live in Edmonson County in Smiths Grove. They have four biological children and eight adoptive children.?

They were approved as foster and adoptive family in 1994; they adopted one child in May 2003, a sibling group of two in June 2004 and another child in October 2008.? They decided to close their foster/adoptive home in November 2008.? They had kept in contact with the birth mother of the sibling group of two over the years and one day the birth mother called her to tell her that her four children were placed in foster care.? Marty and GeorgeAnn contacted the office as this sibling group of four are biological siblings to the two children they already adopted.? They were very eager to help this family and drove several counties to complete the PS MAPP classes again even though DCBS could not guarantee that these children would be placed with them.?

They were reapproved as foster/adoptive parents in May 2009.? They were also approved as a medically fragile foster home in September 2010 as one of the children had been deemed medically fragile.? The children were not placed in their home as a foster care placement until March 2011 and they were adopted by Marty and GeorgeAnn in July 2011.?

I have worked with Marty and GeorgeAnn for several years and they took these children in their home because they love them and want to provide a safe nurturing home for them.? They know that birth family connections are important to the children and they try to maintain that connections even after the adoption if it is in the best interest of the children.? In this case, they fought hard and long for this sibling group of four and were willing to do whatever the Department wanted them to do.? They had a lot of patience with the Department and other community partners because they knew that the children needed to live with their siblings.? Both Marty and GeorgeAnn worked in partnership with each other when the four children came to their home because that made a total of ten children in their home.? They bought a 15 passenger van so they could all ride together.? They would take the children out to eat, shopping or to the park just like any family.? They will admit that they did have people staring at them when they would go out.? When I would make home visits to the Treece?s home, it was not chaotic or wild but rather organized and calm. All of the children appeared to get along great with one another which I witnessed each time I visited with the family.? Marty and GeorgeAnn worked with the therapist weekly for the children as the three older children had several behavior issues. However several months after the adoption the children no longer required counseling any more.? The Treece?s are amazing people with a HUGE heart for children and our agency was so lucky to have had adoptive parents like them.?

They did close their foster/adoptive home in August 2011 and GeorgeAnn keeps me updated on the children through email and pictures.?

If you would like to be a foster or adoptive family or would like more information, please contact Michaelle Johnson at 270-526-3833, classes will begin on January 10th 2013.?

Disney?s new robot plays catch with your kids

15 hrs.

For better ? or worse ? the research lab side of Disney is building a robot that plays a decent game of catch, meaning parents can keep their eyes on Facebook while their kids get a bit of exercise.

The robot has a human-like appearance and uses a Microsoft Kinect to track the balls. After a few practice tosses, almost anyone can successfully play catch with it.

The humanoid is intended to give theme-park visitors a means to interact with robots without actually touching them and accidently causing thousands of dollars? worth of damage, according to the Disney Research video below explaining the project.?

The robot is programmed to turn its head, giving the impression it is maintaining body presence with its playmate and tracking the ball with its eyes. When it misses a bad toss, the robot moves its head as if looking for the lost ball or bowing in embarrassment. Other times, it just shrugs its shoulders.

Importantly, there are no temper tantrums or rants about lost scholarship opportunities. Instead, the robot keeps playing, entertaining the old fashioned way, with a twist of the future thrown in for good measure.

Emerald Automotive, like Bright, has big ideas for PHEV delivery van

A plug-in hybrid delivery van sure seems like a good idea for commercial fleet customers looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better manage volatile gasoline prices, right? Some companies, FedEx and Frito-Lay, are already buying green vehicles, and there are many other companies making a lot of short hauls in crowded urban areas where people would notice a reduction in diesel fumes. So why is this nut so difficult to crack?

Things didn't go so well for no-longer-in-business Bright Automotive. While it didn't offer a plug-in hybrid, Azure Dynamics did offer an electrified Ford Transit Connect to a similar client base, and things didn't go well for them, either. Even if the path to success is in no way guaranteed, the UK-based Emerald Automotive is going to give it a shot.

Emerald Automotive recently moved its office to St. Louis, MO, and is staffed by a team of five ex-Lotus Engineering employees from the UK. The initial idea was to get a loan from the Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program, and that meant moving to America. The company withdrew its request after it looked like the process would be drawn out until 2013. These loans are not guaranteed to work and can be delayed, as Bright Automotive found out. On that point, Emerald CEO Andy Tempest said: "[Bright] relied on getting the DOE loan for far too long, and their break-evens were too high. It's not realistic to expect to sell 50,000 vehicles in a brand-new market."

Emerald started out by marketing its t-001 extended-range concept vehicle in Europe. The Emerald brand came from a joint venture between UK-based Intelligent Energy and Revolve Technologies, which morphed into Emerald Automotive. Emerald is still marketing in Europe and is in discussions with Royal Mail, British Telecom, DHL, Deutsche Post and others.

The t-001 is getting attention from fleets for its capacity ? 66 miles on battery power through its 25-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a total of 463 miles with its extended range internal combustion engine, powered by gasoline in the US and diesel in Europe. It's got a 75-kW electric motor driving the rear axle, allowing the van to make it up to 80 miles per hour.

Tempest claims that the monetary payback for the alt-power price premium compared to a similar-sized ICE will take 17 months in Europe, with its higher fuel prices, and 48 months in the US. Overall, the economics for Emerald look very good in the US and it appears to be worth the relocation. The company won't know for sure until 2015, when the t-001 finally goes into production.

One advantage the company has gained in going the plug-in hybrid route was taking out the huge battery pack needed in a battery-electric version. This lightened the load by 900 pounds; using a lightweight aluminum structure and thermal plastic composite body panels helps, too.

Editor's note: When you click the link to Emerald Automotive in PluginCars.com or from a Google search, it automatically routes you to a website for UK-based saxophonist AndySax. Emerald's CEO is named Andy Tempest and he's British. Very strange. Click on the video link below to learn more about Emerald's plug-in hybrid van.

Apple has asked a federal court to add six more products to its patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung,?including the Samsung Galaxy Note II, in the latest in move in an ongoing legal war between the two companies.

The case is one of two patent infringement lawsuits pending in the U.S. District Court in San Jose by Apple against Samsung. An earlier lawsuit by Apple that related to different patents resulted in a $1.05 billion jury verdict against Samsung on Aug. 24.

Apple is also seeking to add the Samsung Galaxy S III, running the new Android "Jelly Bean" operating system, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Wi-Fi, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the Samsung Rugby Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini, to its lawsuit, according to a court filing on Friday.

"Apple has acted quickly and diligently to determine that these newly-released products do infringe many of the same claims already asserted by Apple," the company said in the filing.

Samsung representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Apple filed the second lawsuit in February, alleging that various Samsung smartphone and tablet products including the Galaxy Nexus infringed eight of its patents.

Samsung denied infringement and filed a cross-complaint alleging that Apple's iPhone and iPad infringed eight of its patents.

A U.S. judge on Nov. 15 allowed Samsung to pursue claims the iPhone?5 also infringes its patents.

The case is Apple Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al, No. 12-cv-00630.

Health and environmental risk in flame retardants in building insulation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Researchers in the United States are calling for a change to the US building codes, following a study showing that the mandatory flame retardants routinely added to foam insulation are not only harmful to human health and the environment, but also make no difference to the prevention of fire in buildings where a fire-safe thermal barrier already exists. Such a change would bring the US building codes in line with regulations in Sweden and Norway.

The research team, which is drawn from US-based centres of excellence including the University of California and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, conducted a thorough review of fire safety literature since the mid-1970s and conclude that the addition of halogenated organic compounds to plastic insulation materials such as polystyrene, polyisocyanurate and polyurethane is costly, ineffective and environmentally damaging. Their conclusions are published in the latest issue of the journal Building Research and Information.

Led by internationally renowned fire expert Dr Vytenis Babrauskas of Fire Science & Technology Inc., the research team investigated the impact of the "Steiner Tunnel test," which is used to test the propagation of fire over the surface of all sorts of building materials in the early stages of fire (before flashover point is reached). Their paper suggests that changing the US building codes to exempt foam plastic insulation materials from the test would avoid the use of thousands of tonnes of flame retardants that are known or suspected to be persistent organic pollutants. They conclude:

"Such a change would ? decrease the cost of foam plastic insulation and encourage the use of insulation materials for increasing building energy efficiency and mitigating climate change. The potential for health and ecological harm from the use of flame retardant chemicals would be reduced and the fire safety of buildings would be maintained.

The Steiner Tunnel test, showing the flame being applied to the ceiling, is an inadequate and inappropriate method for testing insulation safety. Photo: IntertekTesting Services Inc.

Their article begins with a review of the development of the US building codes in relation to fire safety, and foam insulation in particular, and explains that foam plastics used for insulation have required a thermal barrier (usually 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) thick gypsum wallboard) since 1976. In addition, chemicals such as hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) are routinely added in order to meet the requirements of the Steiner Tunnel test. The building codes have never stipulated that chemicals be added to foam plastic insulation, however doing so is the most common way to meet the Steiner test. These additives are semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) which do not bind to the insulation material and are known to be released into the environment throughout the life cycle of insulation. The chemicals can persist and accumulate, and have been implicated in thyroid hormone disruption and nervous system development problems and are potentially carcinogenic.

The experts suggest that exempting foam plastic insulation materials from the Steiner Tunnel test would mean there was no longer a need to add these flame retardants.

As well as presenting a detailed analysis of the problems associated with the Steiner Tunnel test, the article reviews the:

? Adequacy of the thermal barrier

? Fire propagation into a cavity constructed in violation of codes

? Behaviour of exposed foam insulation installed in violation of codes.

The article also discusses alternative courses of action, including the possible development of a more accurate test, the use of different flame retardant chemicals and a range of options for mitigating the impact of the flame retardants currently used.

Finally, the article says that such an action would not be without precedent. Flame retardants were once routinely added to children's pajamas, but their use was discontinued in many regions after a range of adverse environmental and health impacts were identified. Dr Babrauskas and his team conclude that, in the light of their evidence, an equivalent volte-face should be implemented in the US building codes as soon as possible. They also recommend a root and branch review of the process of designing fire standards and building codes, in particular to ensure that fire scientists, building code officials and other regulators consider the efficacy, life cycle, health and ecological impacts of building materials.

Hobbits, superheroes put magic in NZ film industry

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A crate full of sushi arrives. Workers wearing wetsuit shirts or in bare feet bustle past with slim laptops. With days to go, a buzzing intensity fills the once-dilapidated warehouses where Peter Jackson's visual-effects studio is rushing to finish the opening film in "The Hobbit" trilogy.

The fevered pace at the Weta Digital studio near Wellington will last nearly until the actors walk the red carpet Nov. 28 for the world premiere. But after "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" hits theaters, there's more work to be done.

Weta Digital is the centerpiece of a filmmaking empire that Jackson and close collaborators have built in his New Zealand hometown, realizing his dream of bringing a slice of Hollywood to Wellington. It's a one-stop shop for making major movies ? not only his own, but other blockbusters like "Avatar" and "The Avengers" and hoped-for blockbusters like next year's "Man of Steel."

Along the way, Jackson has become revered here, even receiving a knighthood. His humble demeanor and crumpled appearance appeal to distinctly New Zealand values, yet his modesty belies his influence. He's also attracted criticism along the way.

The special-effects workforce of 150 on "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy a decade ago now numbers 1,100. Only five of Weta Digital's workers are actual employees, however, while the rest are contractors. Many accept the situation because movie work often comes irregularly but pays well. Union leaders, though, say the workers lack labor protections existing in almost any other industry.

Like many colleagues, Weta Digital's director, Joe Letteri, came to New Zealand in 2001 to work on the "Rings" trilogy for two years. The work kept coming, so he bought a house in Wellington and stayed.

"People come here because they know it's their chance to do something really great and to get it up on the screen," he said in a recent interview.

Jackson, who declined to be interviewed for this story, launched Weta in 1993 with fellow filmmakers Jamie Selkirk and Richard Taylor. Named after an oversized New Zealand insect, the company later was split into its digital arm and Weta Workshop, which makes props and costumes.

Loving homages to the craft are present in Weta Digital's seven buildings around the green-hilled suburb of Miramar. There are old-time movie posters, prop skulls of dinosaurs and apes, and a wall of latex face impressions of actors from Chris O'Donnell to Tom Cruise.

Its huge data center, with the computing power of 30,000 laptops, resembles a milk-processing plant because only the dairy industry in New Zealand knew how to build cooling systems on such a grand scale.

Little of Weta's current work was visible. Visitors must sign confidentiality agreements, and the working areas of the facilities are off-limits. The company is secretive about any unannounced projects, beyond saying Weta will be working solidly for the next two years, when the two later "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be released.

The workforce has changed from majority American to about 60 percent New Zealanders. The only skill that's needed, Letteri says, is the ability to use a computer as a tool.

Beyond having creativity as a filmmaker, Jackson has proved a savvy businessman, Letteri says.

"The film business in general is volatile, and visual effects has to be sitting right on the crest of that wave," Letteri says. "We don't get asked to do something that somebody has seen before."

The government calculates that feature films contribute $560 million each year to New Zealand's economy. Like many countries, New Zealand offers incentives and rebates to film companies and will contribute about $100 million toward the $500 million production costs of "The Hobbit" trilogy. Almost every big budget film goes through Jackson's companies.

"New Zealand has a good reputation for delivering films on time and under budget, and Jackson has been superb at that," says John Yeabsley, a senior fellow at New Zealand's Institute of Economic Research. "Nobody has the same record or the magic ability to bring home the bacon as Sir Peter."

"You cannot overestimate the fact that Peter is a brand," says Graeme Mason, chief executive of the New Zealand Film Commission. "He's built this incredible reputational position, which has a snowball effect."

Back in 2010, however, a labor dispute erupted before filming began on "The Hobbit." Unions said they would boycott the movie if the actors didn't get to collectively negotiate. Jackson and others warned that New Zealand could lose the films to Europe. Warner Bros. executives flew to New Zealand and held a high-stakes meeting with Prime Minister John Key, whose government changed labor laws overnight to clarify that movie workers were exempt from being treated as regular employees.

Helen Kelly, president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, says a compromise could easily have been reached. She says the law changes amounted to unnecessary union-busting and a "gross breach" of employment laws.

"I was very disappointed at Peter Jackson for lobbying for that," she says, "and I was furious at the government for doing it."

Weta Digital's general manager Tom Greally compared it to the construction industry, where multiple contractors and mobile workers do specific projects and then move on.

Animal rights activists said last week they plan to picket the premiere of "The Hobbit" after wranglers alleged that three horses and up to two dozen other animals died in unsafe conditions at a farm where animals were boarded for the movies. Jackson's spokesman Matt Dravitzki acknowledged two horses died preventable deaths at the farm but said the production company worked quickly to improve animal housing and safety. He rejected claims any animals were mistreated or abused.

Jackson's team pointed out that 55 percent of animal images in "The Hobbit" were computer generated at Weta. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have asked Jackson in the future to create all his animals in the studio.

Controversies aside, the rise of Weta and the expat American community in and around Miramar is visible in everything from a Mexican restaurant to yoga classes. On Halloween, which in the past was not much celebrated in New Zealand, hundreds of costumed children roamed about collecting candy. Americans gave the tradition a boost here, but the locals have embraced it.

The National Business Review newspaper estimates Jackson's personal fortune to be about $400 million, which could rise considerably if "The Hobbit" franchise succeeds. Public records show Jackson has partial ownership stakes in 21 private companies, most connected with his film empire. He's spent some of his money on philanthropy, helping save a historic church and a performance theater.

For all his influence, Jackson maintains a hobbit-like existence himself, preferring a quiet home life outside of work. In the end, many say, he seems to be driven by what has interested him from the start: telling great stories on the big screen.

Sharp ships its first phone with an IGZO display on November 29th, ushers in a low-power LCD era

Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E

The gray clouds of Sharp's gloomy earnings are about to get a silver lining: NTT DoCoMo is at last launching Sharp's new flagship phone, the breathlessly worded Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E, on November 29th. When it arrives, the SH-02E will be its* first smartphone to carry an IGZO-based display and show us just how well the high-brightness, low-energy invention fares in a 4.9-inch, 720p LCD. There's no known fixed pricing, although it's likely the Android 4.0 device will be sitting at the very top of its Japanese carrier's range through its Snapdragon S4 Pro, 16-megapixel camera and LTE data. Not fully convinced of IGZO's worth? Fujitsu's more conventional Arrows V F-04E is arriving a day earlier with a regular LCD and a Tegra 3, although we'd say that it's worth waiting the extra 24 hours to be a technology vanguard.

Update: While the SH-02E was the first phone announced with an IGZO LCD screen, it's been beaten to the market by ASUS' Padfone 2, which is also rocking the new technology.

Italy votes in center-left primary amid recession

(AP) ? Italians voted Sunday in a primary for a center-left candidate to run in spring general elections that will in large part determine how Italy's tries to fix its troubled finances and emerge from a grinding recession.

If none of the five candidates wins a majority, a runoff will be held next Sunday. The race is expected to come down to a faceoff between Pier Luigi Bersani, the 61-year-old leader of the main center-left Democratic Party, and challenger Matteo Renzi, the 37-year-old mayor of Florence.

While the candidates have been gamely campaigning and debating one another ahead of the primary, Sunday's vote has largely been overshadowed by speculation about the political ambitions of Italy's current premier, Mario Monti, and whether ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi will run for office for a fourth term.

Berlusconi again threw a wrench in the primary plans of his center-right People of Freedom party by hinting Saturday that he was "thinking" about returning to politics. Berlusconi has flip-flopped several times on the question in recent weeks, complicating efforts by his party secretary, Angelino Alfano, to rally support behind a party that has been tainted by a series of political finance scandals in recent months.

"If Berlusconi really does return to the field as he has said, I have to ask myself what's the point of having a primary, which only has sense if he doesn't run," Italian news reports quoted Alfano as saying Saturday. "Otherwise we have to rethink everything."

Berlusconi resigned as premier last year amid personal sex scandals and legal woes, unable to convince international markets that he could balance Italy's budget and pass necessary financial reforms to save Italy from a Greek-style debt crisis. Italy's president tapped Monti, a respected economist and former European commissioner, to head a government of technocrats to guide Italy until general elections.

Monti's government has imposed a painful austerity program and pushed through structural reforms that together have succeeded in bringing down Italy's borrowing costs. While ordinary Italians have chafed at the reforms, the positive market reaction to Monti's stewardship has fueled support for a second term, particularly among centrist politicians and some of Italy's business elite.

Monti has ruled out running for premier but has left the door open for a second term if no party wins a clear majority and he is tapped to head another government.

President Giorgio Napolitano made clear last week that Monti couldn't run for office heading a party ticket, since he's currently a senator-for-life. Newspaper analysts suggested Napolitano's aim in keeping Monti out of the campaign, on a potentially unelectable centrist ticket, was to ensure he remained a viable alternative for premier if neither of Italy's main parties wins a clear majority ? or to be named his successor as president.

Small Business Saturday helps boost sales at independently owned ...

ATHENS, Alabama - The streets of downtown Athens weren't as packed Saturday as malls and big-box stores, but a steady stream of shoppers was out supporting Small Business Saturday, a day designated to help mom-and-pops benefit from the post-Thanksgiving rush.

Hubert Crow, who owns Pablo's on Market with his wife Carolyn, said the act of designating the day helps people remember locally owned businesses at a time when shoppers head to malls and shopping centers with chain stores.

"It does bring people in," Crow said Saturday morning. He said traffic had been steady in the bookstore/lunch counter.

The day was conceived by American Express in 2010 but has since been promoted by the Small Business Administration and other retail groups.

Karen Mills of the Small Business Administration wrote in her blog recently that "small businesses are the backbone of our communities. And when we shop small, we not only get great products and services, but we support our neighbors and strengthen our local economies. Over the last two decades, small and new businesses have been responsible for creating two out of every three net new jobs in the U.S., and today over half of all working Americans own or work for a small business."

Local artist Carole Foret, who owns a gallery downtown, said the event impacts the entire community.?

"Small Business Saturday is very important to promote sales that support our Athens, Ala., economy," she said. "It's also important to stimulate small businesses since we have been hit so hard by the recessed economy we've been living with for quite some time. I appreciate this day so much and experienced one of the best sales days I can remember."

Shannon Bryant, who owns the gift shop Pimento's in downtown Athens, had additional employees on hand Saturday to help with the crowd of customers in her store.

"It's been a great start-up to the Christmas season," she said. "I think it's important to shop local people people don't realize the taxes they pay here go to our schools and our roads."

Trisha Black, director of the downtown revitalization group Spirit of Athens, said designation of the day is important in helping people understand the impact of independent businesses.

"I'm encouraged to see that people know the value of supporting our small businesses and to see a nationwide movement to do so," she said.

Black said people can better understand the impact of small businesses on the economy by learning about The 3/50 Project.

Its purpose is to show the impact of spending $50 per month at locally owned businesses. Here is a look at the program's mission:

1. Think of three independently owned businesses you would miss if they disappeared and buy something there each month.

2. If half the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned independent businesses, it would generate more than 42.6 billion in revenue.

3. For every $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If that same amount is spent in a national chain, only $43 stays local; of that money spent online, none returns to the community.

According to the SBA, Small Business Saturday boosted many "Main Street" businesses in 2011, with more than 100 million Americans shopping at independently-owned small businesses.

"By shopping small, we can help America's small businesses do what they do best: grow their businesses, create good jobs, and ensure that our communities are vibrant," Mills said in her blog.

Mental health court tries to help break the cycle - Northwest - The ...

EVERETT, Wash. ? A new mental health court has opened in Snohomish County to help find solutions for people living with mental illness who are caught in the criminal justice system.

The court is designed to solve issues that can't be easily addressed in a traditional court, The Daily Herald reported ( http://is.gd/ccRB5K).

So far, two people have opted into the program. A third person is in the early stages. The program could eventually manage 20 cases.

The pilot project is funded from a portion of a sales tax specifically collected to pay for services for those in the community living with a mental illness and those with substance abuse problems.

These cases would have been in the court system anyway, but are now being diverted to the mental health court in hopes of providing long-term solutions.

Participants likely will be someone "who has gone through the system over and over again," said Everett District Court Judge Tam Bui, who presides over the new court.

The goal is to help people get stable and healthy so they can get out of the cycle, proponents say.

"We're working out what we all need to do to make this a successful program," Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Hal Hupp said.

Hupp will decide whether defendants are legally eligible for the program, by looking at the current charge, as well as any past criminal history. The court generally isn't going to accept anyone charged with a felony and will avoid anyone with a past history of violence.

"We don't want the program to fail because we brought in the wrong person," Hupp said.

Participants who opt into the program must meet certain requirements, such as being engaged in treatment, meeting with court's mental health liaison and following the recommendations of health care providers. The program also requires regular court visits.

The judge, lawyers and a mental health liaison gather before the court hearings to talk about each participant's progress and if there are any additional issues that need to be addressed.

"These cases are expected to be dynamic because we're dealing with people's mental well-being," Bui said.

Participants get much more supervision than if their cases were left on the typical trial track, said Jennifer Bartlett, an attorney with the Snohomish County Public Defender Association.

"There will be more intervention earlier. There's just a lot more supervision and monitoring," she said.

The court will maintain jurisdiction over the cases for two years. If participants fail to meet the requirements, they face being convicted of the charge. If they successfully complete the program, the charge can be dismissed.

"Not only is it humane, but it's the most effective way to deal with this set of the population," Bui said.

Gay and lesbian families to be given legal protection in Ireland ...

Ireland to introduce a new bill to give greater protection for gay and lesbian families.
Ireland?s Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN) has welcomed comments made by Justice Minister Alan Shatter on the need to improve legal provision for gay parents and their children with new legislation.
Speaking at an LGBT reception on Wednesday, Mr Shatter confirmed that the Irish government would bring forward new legislation to secure ?equal citizenship for lesbian and gay parents?.

Mr Shatter announced a comprehensive Family Relationships and Children Bill, to be enacted by the end of 2013, which will provide for relationships of guardianship, custody and access for children in lesbian and gay headed families.
The proposed bill will also provide greater financial security for the children of same-sex parents by addressing maintenance and inheritance rights, and issues concerning assisted human reproduction.

In response, the chair of GLEN Kieran Rose said: ?This is great news for lesbian and gay couples who are parenting children. One of the most urgent issues for these parents is the lack of legal certainty for their families and the lack of protection and security for their children.
?The reforms the minister outlined this evening will transform the status of these families, and secure for their children the range of protections and supports available to children in other families.?

Larry Hagman, whose masterful portrayal of the charmingly loathsome J.R. Ewing on "Dallas" brought him his greatest stardom, has died at the age of 81. That role on CBS' long-running nighttime soap opera was a ratings bonanza for the network, particularly the "Who shot J.R.?" story twist.

Years before "Dallas," Hagman gained TV fame as a nice guy with the fluffy 1965-70 NBC comedy "I Dream of Jeannie." He played Capt. Tony Nelson, an astronaut whose life is disrupted when he finds a comely genie, portrayed by Barbara Eden, and takes her home to live with him.

He also starred in two short-lived sitcoms, "The Good Life" (NBC, 1971-72) and "Here We Go Again" (ABC, 1973). His film work included well-regarded performances in "The Group," ''Harry and Tonto" and "Primary Colors."

Here, in images, are some of Hagman's memorable moments:

Kings upset listless Lakers, 113-97

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? The Los Angeles Lakers had talked about bringing Showtime back to the franchise when they hired Mike D'Antoni to implement his fast and flashy offense.

The curtains are still waiting to be raised on that act.

Kobe Bryant scored an efficient 38 points but Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol struggled inside, and the lethargic Lakers lost 113-97 to the struggling Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night to snap a three-game winning streak.

"If we're going to play Showtime, my God, they just closed the whole theatre on us," D'Antoni said. "Showtime, are you kidding? It was Muppet Time."

Marcus Thornton scored 23 points and Tyreke Evans had 18 to pace Kings, who had lost five straight games. Jason Thompson added 13 points and 10 rebounds to help Sacramento run away in the fourth quarter and cement the latest Lakers setback.

Los Angeles seemed to be turning things around since hiring D'Antoni. Instead, the Lakers looked lost and listless against the Western Conference's worst team, showing all the same problems that got coach Mike Brown fired.

"The first half might have been the worst basketball I've seen in 10 years," D'Antoni said. Later, he added, "It was like we were wrestling in mud."

Bryant finished 11-of-20 shooting and Jodie Meeks had 15 points off the bench as D'Antoni lost for the first time on the Lakers bench. A night after beating Brooklyn in Los Angeles, the Lakers might've been bad enough to give D'Antoni a headache to go with the pain still throbbing in his surgically replaced knee.

Bryant still almost willed his tired team back.

After the Lakers went down by 10 points early in the fourth quarter, he converted a three-point play over DeMarcus Cousins that sliced Sacramento's lead to 96-92 with 3:06 remaining. Thornton thwarted the rally in a hurry, swishing a 3-pointer from the top of the key on the next possession.

Officials whistled Gasol for a flagrant foul when he swatted Thompson in the face going for a rebound. Thompson made one of two free throws, Cousins added a pair of driving layups and a free throw to put Kings ahead 105-93, and the home fans chanting "Beat L-A! Beat L-A!" while Bryant finished the game on the bench with a towel over his head.

"It always feels good beating the Lakers," Thornton said. "Our fans were into it so we don't really want to let them down. So we came out and played hard, I don't know what for, but we played extremely hard against the Lakers."

Though point guards Steve Nash and Steve Blake are expected to be out with injuries for at least another two games, the limited Lakers talent was hardly an excuse in this matchup.

The Lakers held Sacramento to 31 percent shooting in the first quarter. Kings big man Chuck Hayes also had to go back to the locker room to receive stitches after he was cut around his right eye and had blood dripping down his cheek, and yet Los Angeles still only led by six.

Aaron Brooks started Sacramento's spurt in the third quarter when he floated an underhand layup over Howard and drew a foul for a three-point play on the new Lakers center, who tumbled hard into a row of photographers under the baseline. Brooks added a jumper and a 3-pointer to highlight the 17-5 run that put the Kings ahead 69-58.

"Our team went on a whirlwind," Kings coach Keith Smart said.

D'Antoni kept yelling and motioning for the Lakers to sprint up court to match Sacramento's speed. Instead, they often kept the pace at a slow crawl.

Howard finished with seven points on 2-of-4 shooting. Gasol scored eight points on 3 of 10 from the field, and the Lakers were outscored 50-22 in the paint.

"It seemed like we were a little lethargic for whatever reason," Bryant said. "We just have to push through it, particularly the second unit, especially while Dwight is in there. You don't have to go to as many pick-and-rolls, really, just dump the ball down to him and let him operate."

Never happened.

After the Lakers closed within a point, James Johnson made three straight layups during an 11-2 run that put the Kings ahead 88-78 early in the fourth quarter. D'Antoni called a timeout in the middle of Sacramento's surge to put his starters back in the game and give his listless Lakers a chance to refocus.

No chance for that now.

D'Antoni's knee ? and the Lakers mettle ? will be tested even more. Los Angeles plays at Memphis on Friday and at Dallas on Saturday to complete a quick three-game trip.

"I think you always have a little bit of shock when a guy comes in new, and so you start off all like puppies out there," D'Antoni said of his team's turnaround when he was hired. "Now it's back to reality a little bit."

NOTES: The Kings won all three preseason games against the Lakers. The series is 1-1 in the regular season, with the home team winning each time. ... Howard made 3 of 4 free throws after going 7 for 19 from the line a night earlier against Brooklyn. His first attempts came with 7:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Matt Barkley On Staying At USC: 'I Don't Regret It One Bit'

LOS ANGELES -- Whenever Matt Barkley thought about his final run down the Coliseum tunnel, the Southern California quarterback never imagined doing it with no helmet, no pads ? and his throwing arm in a sling.

Instead of facing Notre Dame for a shot at a national championship, the Trojans' star quarterback is sidelined with a sprained shoulder. Instead of playing for the nation's No. 1 team, Barkley's unranked teammates are playing against it.

If this is his storybook ending, Barkley would like to fire the author.

Yet a month of disappointment and discouragement culminating in an injured shoulder still isn't enough to shake Barkley's faith in his decision to return for one more season in the only uniform he ever dreamed of wearing.

"I took a chance," Barkley said Tuesday while a black sling supported his arm. "I don't think enough guys really go for it enough these days, and I did."

Barkley will watch the Trojans' regular-season finale Saturday from the sideline after getting hurt on a sack in last week in USC's loss to UCLA. He doesn't know whether he'll recover in time to play in the Trojans' bowl game, although coach Lane Kiffin is optimistic.

Optimism still isn't difficult to find at USC, even after three losses in four games ? and that's mostly due to Barkley's leadership. The Trojans (7-4, 5-4 Pac-12) plummeted out of the Top 25 after starting the season at No. 1, yet the furor over their performance is mostly confined to their fans and college football pundits.

Barkley and the Trojans thought they had a shot at the Heisman Trophy and the national title. They'll get neither, yet they're still having fun.

"It didn't turn out the way I planned," Barkley said. "But I think over these last four years, and especially this year, I've learned so much. (I've) grown, matured a lot since last year I really think, and that will prepare me for the next level and for later in life. I don't regret it one bit."

With the perspective of time, Barkley knows he'll feel even better about his achievements during his four seasons at USC. He rewrote the conference record book during a USC-record 47 starts over four seasons, becoming the Pac-12's leader in touchdown passes, yards passing, completions and total offense.

And Barkley looms as an important leader in USC's history, representing his teammates as their spokesman when the program was leveled by NCAA sanctions in 2010. He never wavered in his commitment during a two-year bowl ban, standing up for the school that first captured his imagination as a kid growing up in Orange County.

"I can't feel worse for a family and for a kid," Kiffin said. "The fact that he's not running down that tunnel in his last game, and now two times in a row he doesn't get to play Notre Dame, it's very unfortunate. We feel as bad as we can, but he'll be stronger for it. He'll come out of this thing, and we're going to go out and play great for him."

Kiffin had lobbied Barkley to stay at USC for his senior year since shortly after he took the job in 2010, and the former Oakland Raiders coach has consciously attempted to prepare Barkley for the NFL throughout his final two seasons. Kiffin is taking it a step further this week: While redshirt freshman Max Wittek studies defenses in preparation for his first career start, Barkley is attending game-planning meetings with Kiffin's coaching staff.

"Matt has been in some of our coaching meetings as far as preparation, how we break down the defense as coordinators and the different personnel, and how we attack everything," Kiffin said. "(We) just thought that would be good for him in a time that there's not much for him to do, to help prepare him on how to prepare for the next level."

Wittek and fellow freshman backup Cody Kessler have praised Barkley's generosity and instruction. The senior plans to be in Wittek's ear on the sideline with encouragement and instruction while facing the Irish's imposing defense.

Barkley should know soon whether he can play in his first postseason game since the 2009 Emerald Bowl in San Francisco. He's more focused on trying to finish a low season on a high note, even if he has to celebrate on the sideline.

"We're in a hungry mood right now to get a win, and I think it'll send us into December feeling great," Barkley said. "Nothing is always as it's supposed to be in life. Sometimes things go as planned, but a lot of the times, things go unaccording to plan. So it's just something you have to deal with, and I'll handle it and stay positive."

Fiona Apple Postpones Tour to Care for Dying Dog - NYTimes.com

Fiona Apple said on Tuesday she is postponing a tour of South American cities because her dog is dying.

Ms. Apple posted an image of a hand-written letter on her Facebook page explaining that her dog Janet, a pit bull she found as a puppy in Echo Park in Los Angeles, suffers from Addison?s disease and has a tumor in her chest. She said the dog?s health has worsened in recent days and the animal appears to be close to death.

?I just can?t leave her now, please understand,? Ms. Apple wrote to her fans. ?If I go away again, I?m afraid she?ll die and I won?t have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out.?

Ms. Apple recently finished the North American leg of her tour to promote her most recent album, ?The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.? She was scheduled to do three concerts in Brazil next week, then travel to Argentina and Mexico.

In her letter, Ms. Apple described her extremely close relationship with her pet, writing that ?Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact.?

?She?s my best friend and my mother and my daughter, my benefactor, and she?s the one who taught me what love is,? Ms. Apple wrote.

Ms. Apple said the dog ?slept in bed with me, her head on the pillow, and she accepted my hysterical, tearful face into her chest, with her paws around me, every time I was heartbroken, or spirit-broken, or just lost, and as years went by, she let me take the role of her child, as I fell asleep, with her chin resting above my head.?

?She was under the piano when I wrote songs, barked any time I tried to record anything, and she was in the studio with me all the time we recorded the last album,? Ms. Apple said.

Ms. Apple said she had found the dog about 13 years ago with a rope around its neck. It appeared to have been pitted against other, more aggressive dogs to build up their confidence in illegal dog fights, she wrote. She added that the dog was ?a pacifist? that never barked or growled.

Saying she ?will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship,? the singer-songwriter said she intended to stay home and bake tilapia for her pet and make it comfortable during its last days.

?I need to do my damnedest to be there for that,? she wrote. ?Because it will be the most beautiful, the most intense, the most enriching experience of life I?ve ever known. When she dies.?

Having a Relationship with someone in Recovery - SoberRecovery ...

This is my first time to write on the site and needed some guidance.

My situation seems to be very complex but am learning that it is more common than others. I have been with someone for over 4 months who is an alcoholic in recovery for 3.5-4 years. I fell in love with this person quite early without knowing them. We have spent every waking moment together for those 4 months and begin to have some conflict as most relationships do sooner or later.

As time progressed during this short period, there were conversations about long-term engagements, marriage and the strong desire to have more kids. I began to focus on that intensely as I fell in love deeper with this person. As our intimacy grew stronger and stronger through lots of experiences of laughter, love and getting to know one another, our conflict began to increase. We both have very strong personalities.

As the conflict grew, we recently discovered that we have a little one on the way into this world. I began to think that a lot of the conflict that has risen has been due to both strong personalities and a pregnancy. We began to go to pre-marital counseling which seemed to start off well but as the arguments grew, the love of my life began to shut down and say things like "I need space", "This is too much for me to handle right now", " We are not compatible" even when our exercises in counseling sessions were saying that we do have capabilities etc.

Since that time, she basically has shut down and will not talk to me but only for brief times. To her own credit, she mentioned to me several times that she wanted to take a step back and get to know each other before moving forward. I tend to be impatient and pushy and now see what she has been talking about all along. We both still admit that we love one another. She will say that she is not capable of dealing with that right now and begins to show typical behaviors of alcoholism in recovery by focusing on self etc.

I would do anything to make this right but I know now I have to focus on my own issues to move forward. Through much counseling and initial meetings at Al-Anon, I am beginning to understand the behaviors of alcoholism coupled with the typical behaviors of a pregnancy.

As a result, I am wondering if this is a common situation? I have backed off and am not pressuring her to do anything at this point. I am just wondering based on the experience of others if this is a salvageable situation? I still believe everyone has issues but if you truly love one another, you will do what it takes to work through the difficulties of life.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
