The experience opened Lamers? eyes to a major failing of the health care system.
In 1974 Lamers, a psychiatrist, helped start one of the first hospice programs in the United States, Hospice of Marin in Northern California. It helped terminally ill patients spend their last days at home, surrounded by family and supported by health workers and volunteers trained in end-of-life care.
Considered one of the founders of the modern hospice movement in the United States, Lamers died Feb. 2 in Malibu of an infection, his family said. He was 80.
The approach he championed spread across the country. There are now more than 5,000 hospice programs in the U.S., according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Unlike in England, where the modern hospice movement began, the majority of U.S. hospices provide care in patients? homes rather than in a separate facility.

He once estimated that at least one-third of his patients had issues that stemmed from unresolved grief.
At first he considered opening a counseling center to help people deal with loss. His focus changed after he met Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the Swiss-born psychiatrist whose 1969 bestseller ?On Death and Dying? lifted the taboo in the medical community on discussions of dying. She encouraged Lamers to start a hospice and introduced him to the work of Cicely Saunders, who in 1968 had establis hed the first modern hospice, St. Christopher?s in London.
Saunders? concept was to provide home-like comforts for the dying in a facility devoted to their care. Although impressed with Saunders? pioneering efforts, Lamers didn?t want to raise money for a building. He thought there was no better home-like environment ?than one?s own home,? Doka said.
With Rev. John Thornton, an Episcopal priest, and social worker Barbara Hill, Lamers started Hospice of Marin out of his house in San Rafael. Now called Hospice by the Bay, it serves four Northern California counties.
One of Lamers? earliest cases was a woman from the Midwest with terminal cancer who was new in town and had no friends or family. She wanted to die at home with her dog. Lamers and the hospice staff asked her neighbors to help her and promised to show them how.
?They gave her beautiful care, as good as she could have received in our best hospitals,? Lamers told the Marin Independent Journal in 1979. ?When she died, all the people who had helped gathered together. They weren?t strangers anymore; they were like a family. And they said ? when can we do something like this again??
?What Bill was really interested in was building community,? said Sandol Stoddard, author of ?The Hospice Movement? (1978), who observed Lamers? early efforts in Marin. ?He was a joyous person who loved people and loved his work.?
His spirit was not his only bountiful feature. Thornton recalled a time someone mistook part of Lamers? ample physique for a backpack: Lamers, clad in snow gear, said, ?That?s not a backpack, that?s me!?

In the mid-1960s, after serving in the Navy, he moved to Kentfield in Marin County, where he opened a private practice in child and family psychiatry.

Lamers served as Hospice of Marin?s president until 1976 and medical director until 1981. He later was the medical director at hospices in Los Angeles and Calabasas. He also trained scores of hospice managers and was chairman of a national hospice accreditation panel.

DETROIT Technology to restore vision through the use of a component of green algae developed by a Wayne State University professor and scientific director of the Ligon Research Center of Vision at the Kresge Eye Institute has attracted additional funding for therapy development.
The Foundation Fighting Blindness announced a $250,000 grant from their affiliate, National Neurovision Research Institute, to RetroSense Therapeutics, LLC, a Michigan-based company. RetroSense signed a license agreement in 2011 for the novel gene-therapy approaches developed at Wayne State University by Zhuo-Hua Pan, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology and anatomy & cell biology in the School of Medicine.
Pan's novel strategy focused on genetically converting light-insensitive inner retinal neurons into photosensitive cells, thus restoring light sensitivity to retinas that lack photoreceptors. Using a virus that delivers a photoreceptor gene from green algae called channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2), he found that ChR2 made the inner retinal neurons light sensitive, and that this persisted for long periods in the neurons, ultimately leading to restored responses to light in the brain's visual cortex.
Pan, along with colleagues at Salus University in Pennsylvania, developed the breakthrough therapy and follow-on approaches that offer promise to people suffering with blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) retinal degenerative disorders that are currently incurable.
AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people older than 60, affecting more than 8 million in the United States. Worldwide, 500,000 individuals lose their eyesight annually to AMD, which is the result of progressive deterioration of photoreceptor cells in the macula, near the center of the retina.
RP is a genetically-determined eye disease caused by mutations in more than 100 different genes. An estimated 100,000 Americans have RP, which typically manifests as night blindness and progresses to tunnel vision and sometimes complete blindness.
"This field of research, known as optogenetics, is a very promising and creative approach to restoring vision in people with severe vision loss or complete blindness," said Stephen Rose, M.D., the foundation's chief research officer, in a news release. "RetroSense has outstanding technology, and it has achieved impressive results in lab studies. We are pleased to support the company in its effort to move the treatment into a clinical trial."
Rose said an advantage of optogenetic treatments is that because they work independently of genetic defects causing disease, they may work for a variety of retinal degenerations.
The foundation said the therapy developed by Pan has demonstrated restored vision in animal models with highly degenerated retinas. RetroSense Therapeutics is seeking U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for a Phase I clinical trial.
Sean Ainsworth, founder and chief executive officer of RetroSense, licensed the technology from Wayne State University. He has said that Phase I clinical trials could begin in early 2013.

Such a small variance seems insignificant, but it becomes significant as product amounts increase.
Other passages in the Bible speak to dishonest scales, such as Micah 6:11. In this passage it appears that the businessman is using weights that appear to be correct but are inaccurate. This same idea of false measurements is described in Malachi 3:8-10, where God accuses some of lying about the amount of food they brought to His storehouse.
Lying about the value of something reminds us of the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. This couple was involved in a real estate deal with good intentions. They sold their property with the intent of giving the proceeds to their church, but when Ananias gave a different amount from the sale price, Peter asked him why he lied. Apparently, this couple collaborated about their story, because Sapphira repeated the same amount of the sale as her husband. In this case, their bad business practices brought untimely death. We are told that their deaths reverberated through the fledgling church (Acts 5:5) and certainly were deterrents from similar practices.
Amos calls out businessmen who are using faulty scales, but bad business practices can take on a plethora of forms. A business leader can allow bad business practices through false financial statements, shortcuts in manufacturing that knowingly impact the quality of a product, slow or non-payment of a supplier, or breaking the terms of a contact. It's been a busy month for Frankie Ford Jr.
The Commercial Township, N.J.,?first-grader is credited with saving his mother's life after she went into respiratory arrest from a severe asthma attack?on Jan. 19, reported NBCPhiladelphia.com. Since then, Frankie has received a hero's plaque from the local 911 dispatch unit, a brand new bike, and some time in the media spotlight. But the best gift has been his mom's health.
"He's my little hero," Debbie Ford, who has fully recovered since the incident, told NBCPhiladelphia.com on Monday.?"I wouldn?t be here right now if it wasn?t for him."
It was 7:15 a.m. on?that school?morning in January when Frankie, the oldest of three boys, noticed something was wrong with his mom. His father had already left for work, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported, so Frankie picked up the phone and called 911.
"Please... my mom's dying," Frankie cried.
The 911 operator was able to hear Ford in the background, gurgling. She asked Frankie how old he was.
"I'm six years old," a panicked Frankie is heard saying.
?At one point, he offered to do chest compressions.
"I got pump for you?" Frankie is heard asking on the 911 call. ?My mom, for you? My mom -- my hands on her heart.?
"OK, can you feel anything?" the operator asked him.
As Frankie continued to talk with the 911 dispatcher, Ford was able to mumble the family's address?as she gasped for air. Frankie stayed on the line as emergency crews rushed to their home, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported.
"I was feeling pretty scared and sad," Frankie said on Monday. He said he told the 911 operator, "My mom can't breathe and I need your help."
Just in?time When EMTs arrived, they found Ford in her bed. She had a pulse, but wasn't breathing, said NBCPhiladelphia.com.
?I was terrified,? Laurel Lake Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company?EMT Veronica Trio said. ?I was really afraid that she was not going to make it. A couple more minutes and she would have gone into cardiac arrest.?
Ford was rushed to South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Vineland, N.J., and put on a ventilator, reported TheDailyJournal.com. About a week later, she was discharged, and Trio, the EMT,?reached out to the family to see how Ford was doing - and to tell them that the Laurel Lake Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company wanted to honor Frankie.
Last Monday, the Fords watched as Frankie received a wooden plaque from the fire company, an award acknowledging his "courage and quick thinking in calling 911, saving his mother's life," reported TheDailyJournal.com.
Robert Curry, a member of the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, told TheDailyJournal.com that Frankie might not appreciate the plaque until he was older -- and suggested they present him with another award: A blue BMX mongoose bike. The crew wheeled it out for him and Frankie jumped on the seat, reported TheDailyJournal.com.
Frankie doesn't talk about the rescue, but according to TheDailyJournal.com, wrote this in a thank you note to the EMTs: ?Dear Ambulance People, Thank you for saving my mom. When I grow up and get big, I want to be a ambulance person too.?
