Perry fights to claw way back into contention

(AP) ? A swaggering Rick Perry parachuted into Iowa last summer at the top of the GOP presidential field with a job-creation message, an off-the-cuff speaking style and a fledgling campaign organization. He quickly nosedived.

Lately, a more humble Texas governor has been trying to claw his way back into contention with a much different approach.

He has tailored his pitch to tea party activists and religious conservatives, replacing a bus emblazoned with "Get America Working Again" with one carrying the slogan "Faith, Jobs, Freedom." He is more disciplined and less free-wheeling when he talks with voters than he was when he suggested, on his first visit here, that the Federal Reserve chairman may be committing treason. And he's beefed up his campaign staff with presidential veterans and targeted his travel to key conservative regions.

"I ask you to do more than just attend this rally and I ask you to do more than just sign up for my campaign at tables in the back of this room. I ask you to brave the weather on Jan. 3," Perry pleaded during a recent stop here ? his second to this conservative, western Iowa town in as many weeks. In a new TV ad, he says: "As we've traveled across the state, I've been humbled by your dedication" and asks voters for help.

Perry has repeated that plea over the past few weeks in breakfast diners, town squares and coffee shops, planting himself in parts of Iowa filled with religious voters in hopes that a retooled campaign message that sells him as the only candidate who is a Christian conservative and a Washington outsider will resonate with a chunk of the electorate that's still undecided or willing to change their minds before the caucuses Tuesday night.

"If we replace a Democratic insider with a Republican insider, do you think we're really going to change Washington, D.C.? No way," Perry says everywhere he goes. "I am the anti-establishment outsider who goes to Washington with a sense of purpose. And that purpose is to make Washington, D.C., as inconsequential in your life as I can make it."

Another staple: "I defended traditional marriage and protected the unborn children, including signing a budget that defunded Planned Parenthood and they closed down 12 of their abortion clinics in the state of Texas." His pitch is peppered with anti-Washington rhetoric and references to his faith and he always quotes the Bible at the end.

Perry's even gone so far as to switch his position on abortion. He told a pastor one day that he had undergone a "transformation" and now opposes abortion in cases of rape and incest. A day later he clarified his stance, saying he would allow the legal procedure only if the pregnancy threatened the woman's life.

It's unclear whether Perry's unabashed pitch to conservatives and tea party backers will help him rise high enough in the coming days to finish in the top three in the Iowa caucuses, typically the threshold candidates must meet to prove they are viable. His challenge is steep, given that he's fighting for the same slice of the Iowa electorate as several rivals, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum among them.

But unlike them, he has money.

The roughly $5 million Perry has spent on advertising since late October ? combined with heavy spending from a super PAC that supports his candidacy __ may be paying dividends. He seems to be running slightly stronger in public and private polls than he has in months. Perry's final push got the help of an additional $865,000 in television advertising from Make Us Great Again, a pro-Perry political action committee that has spent more than $1 million in Iowa.

And he's drawing large, enthusiastic crowds on a bus tour with his retooled campaign message.

To wrap up Thursday, he packed every seat in a community center in Marshalltown and curious caucus-goers lined the walls and stood in the back of the room. After he jogged in, he immediately dived into the crowd, reaching out with both arms to shake hands and squeeze shoulders.

Some liked what they heard but still weren't ready to sign on.

"I want a Christian in the White House who isn't ashamed of it. We don't have that in the White House with Obama," said Kay Miles, a Hopkinton retiree who caucused for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee four years ago. She met with Perry last week in Manchester and came away impressed but hadn't decided which candidate to support.

Sharon Knudson, a factory worker from DeWitt who makes car air fresheners, likes Perry, too, but wasn't ready to sign up.

Knudson said she wants someone who won't "mess with our values" the way she says Washington elites have.

"We have a great country, but they want to tinker with things here and there and before you know it, we will have drifted so far from our values that we won't recognize our country," Knudson said. "Rick Perry won't put up with that."

Perry's pitch to make Congress a part-time branch of government also may be resonating.

"Congress has gotten power hungry and they've forgotten who sent them there in the first place," said Tammy Hardersen, a retired ad sales manager from Waukee who saw Perry speak in Urbandale. "There aren't a lot of folks looking out for folks like me." But, she thought, perhaps Perry will.

It's safe to say that Perry ? a dogged campaigner who has never lost an election in Texas ? likely didn't anticipate being far behind his rivals when he was welcome to the race in August with great fanfare. He was greeted as the battle-tested figure who might quiet conservatives' frustrations with the other contenders. He instantly rocketed to the top of polls before withering under close scrutiny. He stumbled during debates, appeared erratic and frightened donors.

Eventually, he pressed reset.

Perry hired veterans from George W. Bush's presidential campaign. He started watching what he said. He shed the "jobs governor" pitch and shifted his strategy to focus on courting tea party and religious voters who hold great sway in Iowa's contest.

The next five days will determine whether the shift worked.

Clues sought in house fire that killed 5

Investigators were talking to a New York City advertising executive and an acquaintance who survived a Christmas morning house fire that killed her three daughters and her parents to try to determine what caused the blaze.

Madonna Badger, who was having work done on the home she bought for $1.7 million last year, was released from hospital Monday.

The home was demolished Monday due to the fire damage and safety concerns.

Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? and her parents, who were visiting for the holiday, died.

Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, had worked as a Santa at Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store in Manhattan. "Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. on Christmas morning and rushed outside to help, but they could only watch in horror as flames devoured the grand home and the shocked, injured survivors were led away from the house.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening.

The fire might have been related to a fireplace on the first floor, a source familiar with the case told NBCNewYork.com.

Property records show she bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The male acquaintance who also escaped the blaze was a contractor who was doing work on the home, Stamford police Sgt. Paul Guzda said. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

"It is a terrible, terrible day," Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at the scene of the fire on Sunday. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

The Stamford Advocate identified the contractor as a male friend named Michael Borcina.

Police officers drove Badger's husband, Matthew Badger, from New York City to Stamford on Sunday morning. The Badgers reportedly are separated.

Firefighters knew there were other people in the home but could not get to them because the flames were too large and the heat too intense, said Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte, his voice cracking with emotion.

"It's never easy. That's for sure," he said. "I've been on this job 38 years ... not an easy day."

A neighbor who lives across the street, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and saw that the house was engulfed by flames.

"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."

He told The Advocate that he later learned the screams were coming from Madonna Badger.

"The reason she was screaming, of course, was because her family was inside the house," he said.

Cingari said he did not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it.

Charles Mangano, who lives nearby, said his wife woke him up and alerted him to the fire. He ran outside to see if he could help and saw fire trucks in front of the house.

"I heard someone yell 'Help, help, help me!' and I started sprinting up my driveway," Mangano told The Advocate.

He told the newspaper he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a T-shirt with no shoes and a woman being taken out of the house.

Video: Conn. house fire kills 5 on Christmas (on this page)

The woman said, "My whole life is in there," Mangano said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."

The house was undergoing heavy construction last summer, he told The Advocate.

Badger's father known as 'Happy Santa'
Badger's parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson, were going to celebrate their 49th anniversary on Monday, a family member told The New York Times. Lomer Johnson, 71, had spent Saturday working as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, a gig he had been doing since retiring as a safety director for the parent company of Jack Daniels.

The man with the long white beard loved posing as Santa, said the relative, who asked not to be named.

?That?s all he ever wanted to be,? the family member told The Times. ?He stopped shaving the day he retired.?

He advertised his services through a site called gigmasters.com, where he referred to himself as "Happy Santa." His profile reads "I am now a santa because my oldest granddaughter asked me to be a pretend Santa Claus. I have enjoyed it more than any job I've ever had."

Lomer Johnson also formerly worked to prevent fires as safety chief at a company in Kentucky.
He was remembered as a stickler for safety details by a former boss at the Louisville, Ky., liquor maker Brown-Forman Corp., where he retired as safety and security director years ago.

Former Brown-Forman executive Robert Holmes Jr. said Monday it was Johnson's job to keep plant workers safe. He says Johnson's responsibilities included planning fire drills.

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

Badger was the creative mind behind major advertising campaigns for leading fashion brands, including the iconic Mark Wahlberg underwear ads for Calvin Klein.

Raised in Kentucky, Badger began her career working as a graphic designer in the art department of Esquire magazine. Before starting her own company, she worked as an art director for several magazines and CRK, the in-house advertising agency for designer Calvin Klein.

Badger & Winters has worked with Proctor & Gamble, CoverGirl, A/X Armani Exchange, Emanuel Ungaro and Vera Wang, among other high-profile corporations.

Tar Heels fall with a thud in interim coach's last game

SHREVEPORT, La. -- After North Carolina's 41-24 defeat against Missouri in the Independence Bowl on Monday, Everett Withers walked into the locker room for the final time as North Carolina's coach. He said he told his players he loved them.

He referenced the drama the Tar Heels have experienced in the past two seasons - an NCAA investigation, the firing of coach Butch Davis - and Withers said he told his team to carry on the lessons they learned from those trying times. The Tar Heels had desperately wanted to give Withers a victory in his finale.

But their trip to Independence Stadium didn't come with an ending fit for storybooks. Instead, North Carolina (7-6) gave an abysmal performance - especially on defense.

As much as the Tar Heels talked about winning for Withers, they lacked the effort - and the execution - necessary for the desired outcome.

"You know, you always want to go out with a win," Withers said. "Regardless, you always want to win your last one. Doesn't always work out that way for you. So you just move on."

Withers will move on to Ohio State, where he will serve as co-defensive coordinator. And the Tar Heels, when they return from winter break, will move on to the Larry Fedora era. The former Southern Mississippi coach will begin his official duties in Chapel Hill on Jan. 9.

But most North Carolina players weren't in the mood to talk about the future Monday night.

"I'm still lingering on this game," said freshman running back Gio Bernard. "I think (the future) really won't kick in until we get back ... and start talking to the new coaching staff and things like that. ...

"But for the most part, this entire break that we have coming up, I think I'll be lingering on this game."

Bernard had been dominant at times this season, but Missouri held him to 31 yards on 13 carries. North Carolina, meanwhile, had no answer for the Tigers' running game.

Missouri (8-5) gained 337 yards rushing and averaged 7.3 yards per carry.

The Tar Heels arrived in Shreveport with a rushing defense that ranked 14th nationally, but they were confused and often out of position against the Tigers' spread-option ground game.

James Franklin, the Missouri quarterback, gained 142 yards on 18 carries. Kendial Lawrence added 108 yards rushing. Franklin and Lawrence combined to run for half of Missouri's six touchdowns.

The Tar Heels started fast and led 7-0 lead after Bryn Renner's 22-yard touchdown pass to Dwight Jones. But Missouri answered with 31 consecutive points and led 31-10 at halftime.

"We had momentum and then really just couldn't get things going," Renner said.

Renner spoke with emotion about the Tar Heels' failure to win - their failure to do much of anything - in Withers' final game.

When it was over, Withers walked quickly to midfield to shake hands with Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, and then Withers hurried off the field.

His tenure as North Carolina's interim coach was over.

"I just take away what we went through to get to this point," said Renner, who passed for 317 yards and three touchdowns. "We went through a lot this season and showed the character of our coaching staff and these players and this team. I can't say enough about this team."

He and his teammates, though, had more difficulty explaining this defeat.

The Tar Heels promised they wouldn't lack motivation in Withers' final game - that they also wanted to put on a good show for their future coach, Fedora.

Instead North Carolina walked off the field with a disappointing end to a disappointing era.

UK's Queen visits Prince Philip after heart scare (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Queen Elizabeth visited her 90-year-old husband Prince Philip in hospital on Saturday where Britain's longest-serving royal consort was recovering from surgery to ease chest pains he had suffered in the days before Christmas.

Buckingham Palace said the operation to clear a blocked heart artery was a success, but Philip appeared bound to miss much of the royals' Christmas celebrations at their rural Sandringham estate.

Heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and siblings Prince Edward, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne also visited Papworth hospital near Cambridge to see their recuperating father, who said this year he wanted to wind down some of his royal duties.

"Prince Philip was in good spirits," a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said, describing the visits. "He will remain in hospital under observation for a short period."

Philip had been preparing to enjoy Christmas with his family - including grandson Prince William and his new wife Catherine - at Sandringham in east England, with an exchange of gifts on Christmas Eve and a Boxing Day shoot among the highlights.

The Duke of Edinburgh, known for his outspoken and sometimes brusque manner, has had a hectic year of engagements in 2011 including the wedding of William and Catherine, entertaining U.S. President Barack Obama and a trip to Australia.

There will be little chance to rest in 2012 when 85-year-old Elizabeth, whose annual Christmas Day address will focus on the importance of family, celebrates her 60th year on the throne with a tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

BLOCKED ARTERY

Philip, who married Elizabeth in 1947, was taken to Papworth, one of Britain's main heart and chest centers, about 60 miles away near Cambridge, late on Friday.

"The Duke of Edinburgh was found to have a blocked coronary artery which caused his chest pains," the palace said. "This was treated successfully by the minimally invasive procedure of coronary stenting."

The minor operation involves using a catheter to insert small tube into the artery to clear any blockages.

Philip had attended a lunch for staff a week ago and had been on "very good form," the BBC said.

"He has had these chest pains before and I don't think it's anything untoward, but given his age they are being safe rather than sorry," former royal press spokesman Dickie Arbiter said.

Despite his age, Philip has been in generally robust health this year, ploughing through a busy array of charity work and social engagements.

A pivotal figure in the House of Windsor, he has a reputation as a fiercely loyal consort who prefers outdoor pursuits to introspection.

However, in a BBC interview to mark his 90th birthday in June he said he was hoping for a quieter life in older age.

"I reckon I've done my bit," he said. "I want to enjoy myself a bit now with less responsibility, less frantic rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think of something to say."

Britain's tabloid newspapers have delighted over the years in recounting his many public gaffes.

He once told British students in China: "If you stay here much longer, you'll be slitty-eyed."

Born on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921, Philip served in Britain's Royal Navy before marrying Elizabeth. They have four children, including the heir to the throne, Charles.

Debra Ollivier: Thinking About Sex: How Men And Women Differ (Or Not)

Do men think about sex every seven seconds? What about women? Are you an erotophile or an erotophobe? These are a few questions implicitly raised in a research study that generated some recent buzz and got me thinking about the curiosities of research. Published in the Journal for Sex Research, it's called: "Sex on the Brain? An examination of Frequency of Sexual Cognitions as a Function of Gender, Erotophilia and Social Desirability," by Terri D. Fisher, Zachary T. Moore and Mary-Joe Pittenger.

For starters, if your eyes glazed over on that subtitle, here's some help: In layman terms it might as well read: "A look at how often men and women think about sex based on their gender, how sexually uptight they are (or not), and where they fall on the social register." (And for those of you stumped by the sexy research language: According to Wikipedia, erotophiles talk about sex more openly, feel less guilt about it, and have "more positive attitudes toward sexually explicit material." Erotophobes, on the other hand, feel guilty and fearful about sex, have it less frequently and with fewer partners, and don't like the explicit stuff.

The gist of the study, according to Dr. Fisher, was partly to examine "the crazy old myth that men think about sex every seven seconds." That's a lot of sex on the brain. According to Fisher, "no research has ever found anything even remotely approaching that magnitude." Well, that's reassuring. Because if men did think about sex that often, they'd have little space left in their mental hard drives to think about anything other than, well, their hard drives.

To debunk this every enduring (and endearing) myth, research participants were given a tally-counter to click every time they had a thought about sex. The results weren't surprising: Basically, there's not that big a disparity between men and women when it comes to frequency of thinking about sex. (Those interested in the fine points can read a research extract here.) Men thought a bit more about food and sleep, though that could be connected to sex, too, when you think about it. Have Sex. Eat. Sleep. Not necessarily in that order.

It's also not surprising that erotophiles thought about sex less than erotophobes -- at least they clicked less, which doesn't mean they were telling the truth. And that's the problem with research, isn't it? It stands to reason that if you're an erotophobe, even if you think about sex you might not feel comfortable clicking about it. Then again, it's possible that erotophobes secretly think about sex more often than erotophobes, or in stranger ways, precisely because they have issues with it.

Which brings me to a problematic point about research studies. Seems to me we Americans are more obsessed than any nation on earth with quantifying things. That's not based on empirical data, of course. I'd have to do a research study to confirm it. But every month there seems to be a new study about the "science" of love and sex that generally either proves the obvious, tries to quantify the unquantifiable, or leads me, personally, to wonder: So what? Does it matter what chemicals go off in your brain when you're in love or having sex? What are we supposed to do about bio-behavioral modes designed to quantify romantic love and "passion love scales"? Isn't trying to quantify the vast grey zones of subjective human behavior a little like trying to slip a mold of jello through a keyhole and have it come out the other end intact?

I was compelled to contact Dr. Fisher after reading a recent review of "Sex on the Brain" in the New York Times. It concluded that Fisher and her colleagues were unsuccessful getting "older Americans" to follow-up with their research. Turns out "older" Americans simply meant people older than 25. Getting non-college students to participate without compensation -- meaning anyone over, say, 30 -- was a challenge. When it came to the gender of those who participated, however, women were a resounding majority. " Now, what to make of that?," the Times reporter asked.

Yeah, what about that? Replied Fisher: "I would guess that it has something to do with the fact that women have menopause as a signal that they've entered a new phase of life and men don't have a comparable signal like that. Therefore men are perhaps able to self-delude that they're young, whereas women have to recognize the signs."

The signs, of course, are bleeped out daily and pervasively by a multi-billion dollar anti-aging industry that's focused primarily on women. Hard not to be reminded of aging, even if you're only 21, when anti-aging has become something of a crusade in America. Meanwhile, it's safe to conclude that we all, men and women, think about sex on and off, for various reasons and to various degrees, whether we're having sex or not (philes and phobes alike). And somewhere along the way, we want to eat and sleep.

France ponders removing risky breast implants (AP)

PARIS ? Emmanuelle Maria's breasts were burning and globules of silicone gel were protruding into her armpits. Her implants had exploded inside her. Yet her doctors, she says, told her nothing was wrong.

Now, she wants the French government to tell 30,000 women to get their implants removed ? at the state's expense ? to call attention to their risks and save others from potential pain and indignity.

Prompted by calls from implant wearers and leading doctors, French health authorities are considering a drastic and unprecedented move: recommending mass surgery to rid the country of a type of breast implant that investigators say was secretly made with cheap industrial silicone whose medical dangers remain unclear.

Governments around Europe are hanging on France's decision Friday. Tens of thousands more women in Britain, Italy, Spain and other European nations are walking around with the same pre-filled implants, made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP.

Health officials from several European countries held a conference call Wednesday to discuss the implants, Portugal's Director-General of Health, Dr. Francisco Jorge, told The Associated Press. European Commission spokesman Frederic Vincent said no decisions were made, but France informed the others of the situation.

The main concern in France is the risk of rupture ? more than 1,000 of the 30,000 such implants in France have burst, according to the French health safety agency AFSSAPS ? and uncertainty over what risks the suspected industrial silicone gel could pose when it leaks inside the body.

Meanwhile, eight cases of cancer among women with the implants, including one who died in November, have crystallized concerns and heightened pressure on the government to take action. Friday's government decision will depend partly on guidance from the French National Cancer Institute.

The implants in question were not sold in the U.S., where concerns about silicone gel implants overall led to a 14-year ban on their use. Silicone implants were brought back to the market in 2006 after research ruled out cancer, lupus and some other concerns.

In Britain, the law firm Hugh James solicitors said it is acting for over 250 women with PIP implants who are trying to sue clinics that provided the surgery. In a statement, the firm said the news have been worrying to its clients, many of whom "have already suffered terrible problems as a result of their implants," including ruptures and leakages.

Still, British health authorities say they see no reason so far to have the French-made implants systematically removed, and have said that there is not enough evidence of a link between silicone implants and cancer. Italy's Health Ministry is holding a meeting Thursday to discuss the French-made implants.

Experts from the French Health Ministry will meet Friday to decide what to recommend for women who have the implants. The implants were taken off the market last year after French authorities discovered the company misreported the type of silicone used.

Plastic surgeon Maurice Mimoun of Paris' Saint Louis Hospital said a rupture could leak the silicone gel internally. That in turn could require surgery on other parts of the body to remove it.

"The problem is that these implants are made with a gel that we don't know," he said in an interview. "Once these implants are removed, the story is not over ... we don't know" if there might be other consequences, he said.

Mimoun has recommended that the government push for implant removals, but insisted that the operations needn't be carried out in haste.

Women have filed more than 2,000 legal complaints since the implants were recalled last year, and an investigation into officials at PIP is under way. Investigators suspect the company used cheaper industrial silicone instead of silicone meant for medical use in the implants, cutting costs by up to euro1 million ($1.3 million) a year.

The company has suspended its activities and is being liquidated. Its phones are no longer functioning and emails sent to its staff were not answered.

Implant wearer Maria described wanting new breasts to improve her self-image after an adolescence troubled by a bone disease that left her covered in scars.

She was given the PIP silicone implants in 2007, and started developing burning pains in early 2010. She consulted her surgeon and another specialist he recommended. "They told me, 'There's nothing wrong,'" she recounted.

She then went to two other doctors who confirmed that both implants had burst. She had them removed, and at her own expense, had two new ones implanted ? made by another company.

"The product is dangerous. They told us there was nothing toxic," she told The Associated Press by telephone from her office in La Seyne-sur-Mer in southern France ? the same town where PIP was based.

She accused the company and surgeons of "playing Russian roulette with the health of others."

Tina, a retired Frenchwoman who had her PIP implants removed earlier this year, didn't experience any pain when they ruptured, but said she now worries about what might have leaked into her body in the months she lived unwittingly with the burst implants.

"It's time for surgeons to admit that these implants pose special risks. What we need is a bit of humanity," she said, embarrassed by her ignorance of the dangers and frustrated that doctors didn't warn her about the PIP implants after they were recalled last year.

She didn't want her last name used because some people in her entourage do not know that she had her breasts augmented.

Recommending implant removal for all 30,000 Frenchwomen with these artificial breasts would impose substantial costs to France's state health care system and pose logistical challenges in finding enough surgeons to perform the operations.

The French health system does not pay for cosmetic breast implants, which make up the majority of breast operations, but government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse said state health care would pay for implant removal operations "if it involves a health and public safety emergency."

It is unclear, however, whether the state would pay for replacement implants. About 40,000 women in Britain are believed to have the PIP implants as well. Britain's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said its own testing had found no evidence of toxicity in the PIP implants and no evidence to suggest that women should have them removed.

But the agency said in a statement it "will consider any new evidence which comes to light as a priority."

The British Association for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons said the expected announcement by French medical authorities was "a precautionary measure."

"Surgeons will be in contact with any patient who has received this type of implant if any action is required," it said. "If women are worried or believe that their implants may have ruptured, they should contact their implanting surgeon."

The Italian Health Ministry says it is monitoring the "possible health risks linked to the PIP implants signaled by the French authorities" and it has convened a meeting of its top level health experts for Thursday.

Portugal's General Directorate for Health estimates 1,500-2,000 Portuguese women had the implants and is advising them to visit their doctor for a checkup, Jorge said.

In Denmark, authorities says less than 100 women had these breast implants and the Danish Medicines Agency is in close contact with French authorities.

The French company used to sell saline-filled implants in the United States but its authorization was revoked after a re-evaluation by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000, mainly because of what the FDA deemed incomplete studies.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas for Beginning Cooks [Gifts]

Last-Minute Gift Ideas for Beginning CooksFoodies, experienced home cooks, great bakers?it's usually easy to find gifts for them. But what about the just-out-of-college types? The folks who are just coming around to the values of home cooking? The New York Times' Mark Bittman has a few good ideas.

Bittman offers up a few "packs" that you could throw together for about $75, which include all the gear one would need to roast a chicken, make a really nice pasta dish, or just get some rice and beans into their cooking rotation. But a better idea, and more last-minute-friendly, is a "certificate" for walking someone through your favorite recipe:

Plan a meal; take your non-cook friend to the market; go back home and help cook it. Leave your friend with more food than he or she needs, and leftovers as well. I've done this, and it generates the warm, fuzzy thing. Better still, sometimes just seeing it done is enough to put people on the cooking path.

What's the best gift you ever received, food or kitchen-wise, that got you going in a new direction? Photo by jules:stonesoup.

D.C. leads country in population rise (Politico)

Washington, D.C., is the fastest-growing place in the nation, according to the latest census estimates released Wednesday.

The population in D.C. increased 2.7 percent between April 2010 and July of this year, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated. This boom marks the first time D.C. has led the states in growth since the early 1940s.

Across the country, population climbed by 2.8 million to 311.6 million. The United States? growth of .92 percent, however, was the lowest since the mid-1940s.

?The nation?s overall growth rate is now at its lowest point since before the baby boom,? Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said in a statement.

After D.C., the next-fastest growing states in terms of percentage increase were Texas, Utah, Alaska, Colorado and North Dakota.

California is still the most populous state with 37.7 million, followed by Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois. Texas gained more people than any other state between April 2010 and July 2011, the census noted.

Meanwhile, the only three states to lose population were Rhode Island, Michigan and Maine.

Pilots strike forces flight cancellations in Spain

MADRID (AP) ? Spanish airline Iberia canceled a third of its flights Sunday because of a strike by pilots fearing job losses when company planes are diverted for use by Iberia's planned new budget carrier.

Iberia said it scrapped 91 flights, mostly domestic routes, but that no major disruptions were reported at its bustling Madrid hub or other airports because it managed to find alternative seats on other Iberia flights or with other carriers for about 80 percent of the travelers.

Another one-day strike is planned for Dec. 29.

Iberia, Lineas Aereas de Espana, S.A., plans to divert jetliners from money-losing domestic and medium-haul European routes for Iberia Express, which it hopes to launch early next year using lower-earning, newly hired pilots and flight attendants. The company says its plans are for this carrier to have 40 planes in 2015.

Pilots union SEPLA says it ultimately fears job losses among existing staff with the creation of the unit, designed to compete with budget airlines.

Iberia, Spain's flagship carrier, insists that no job cuts are planned among its current 1,600 pilots.

Compared to Neanderthals, modern humans have a better sense of smell

Thursday, December 15, 2011

Differences in the temporal lobes and olfactory bulbs also suggest a combined use of brain functions related to cognition and olfaction.

The increase of brain size is intimately linked to the evolution of humanity. Two different human species, Neanderthals and modern humans, have independently evolved brains of roughly the same size but with differing shapes. This could indicate a difference in the underlying brain organization.

In a study published this week by Nature Communications, led by Markus Bastir and Antonio Rosas, of the Spanish Natural Science Museum (CSIC), high-tech medical imaging techniques were used to access internal structures of fossil human skulls. The researchers used sophisticated 3D methods to quantify the shape of the basal brain as reflected in the morphology of the skeletal cranial base. Their findings reveal that the human temporal lobes, involved in language, memory and social functions as well as the olfactory bulbs are relatively larger in Homo sapiens than in Neanderthals. "The structures which receive olfactory input are approximately 12% larger in modern humans than in Neanderthals", the authors explain.

These findings may have important implications for olfactory capacity and human behaviour. In modern humans the size of the olfactory bulbs is related to the capacity of detection and discrimination of different smells. Olfaction is among the oldest sense in vertebrates. "Also, it is the only one that establishes a direct connection between the brain and its environment", says Markus Bastir, the lead author of the study. While other senses must pass through different cortical filters, olfaction goes from the environment right into the highest centres of the brain. What is more, "olfaction never sleeps", adds Antonio Rosas, "because we always breathe and perceive smells". The neuronal circuitry of olfaction coincides with that of memory and emotion (the limbic system), "which explains the enormous memory retention and vital intensity of olfaction-mediated life events."

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, who also contributed to the current publication, could recently show differences in the patterns of brain development between modern humans and Neanderthals during a critical phase for cognitive development. "In the first year of life the brains of Neanderthals and modern humans develop differently," says Philipp Gunz from the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. "Modern humans have smaller faces and smaller noses than their Neanderthal cousins. However, the part of the brain that processes smells, is bigger in modern humans than in Neanderthals". "Evidence is accumulating that Neanderthals and modern humans independently evolved large brains and that their brains might have worked differently. Our new study offers a glimpse into the functional significance of these developmental differences," adds Jean-Jacques Hublin, who heads the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig.

Olfactory information projects to brain regions directly responsible for processing of emotion, motivation, fear, memory, pleasure and also attraction. Neuroscientists have coined the term "higher olfactory functions" to describe those brain functions which combine cognition (memory, intuition, perception, judgment) and olfaction. The greater olfactory bulbs and relatively larger temporal lobes in H. sapiens compared to any other human species may point towards improved and different olfactory sense possibly related to the evolution of behavioural aspects and social functions.

Man who died in Washington fire faced rape charge (AP)

VANCOUVER, Wash. ? The Washington state man suspected of killing his wife and her sister and shooting at firefighters before he died in their burning home was scheduled to surrender the next day to face a child rape charge.

Clark County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Dustin Richardson told The Columbian (http://is.gd/BEbd6X) he and investigators had no idea that Steven D. Stanbary of Washougal had a history of being heavily armed, schizophrenic, anti-government and violent.

Reports released Wednesday show Washougal police believe Stanbary molested a girl over a number of years, ending several years before she reported it in December 2010. Stanbary was supposed to turn himself in with an attorney on Dec. 8.

On Dec. 7, gunfire and exploding ammunition kept firefighters away from his home. The three bodies were found inside.

Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron

WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 15, 2011 Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have entered into a ground-breaking collaboration to support and develop regulatory science for the safe and effective use of biomaterials in medical devices.

Effective today, the FDA and ABIA executed a Memorandum of Understanding that will allow the FDA to draw upon ABIA resourcesincluding a library of test methods for crystalline polymers and advanced methods of nanoparticle-based surface defect detectionsto develop combinatorial and high throughput methods to support the FDA's safety review of biomaterials used in medical devices.

Working with the FDA, ABIA will identify and convene a steering committee to guide a process for scientific and intellectual collaborations, outreach, and education initiatives. The steering committee will create a path for joint education and research meetings, and support research collaborations in applied biomaterials, including ways to share unique facilities and equipment specific to the review of biomaterials. The formal Memorandum of Understanding is the first between the FDA and the Akron, Ohio-based ABIA.

"The FDA can better fulfill its commitment to protect and promote public health if it draws upon the intellectual resources, laboratory capacity and research capabilities that reside in academic centers such as ABIA," said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

"Our partnership with ABIA will advance regulatory science by augmenting our capacity to examine and better understand engineered tissues, polymers, and coatings and to detect nanoparticle surface defects," said Shuren.

"We have been impressed with the tremendous professionalism and openness of the Center of Devices and Radiological Health team in working with us to establish this partnership," said Dr. Frank L. Douglas, ABIA President and CEO. "Given the rapid advances in the technology and development of biomaterials, we anticipate that ABIA will be able to bring sophisticated technologies to the FDA, enhancing the agency's knowledge and expertise in regulatory science as it applies to characterizing and predicting the performance of novel materials in biomedical devices."

The FDA and ABIA established this partnership to develop the necessary research protocols and techniques that will standardize ways to evaluate existing or new materials, hybrids, composites and polymer-centric devices, which are anticipated to increase in the regulatory pipeline in the next few years.

The FDA establishes external collaborative partnerships as one way to help achieve their mission of protecting and promoting public health. Through FDA's Public-Private Partnerships Program, the agency is able to leverage the expertise and resources of both the FDA and qualified parties as an "economically compelling" way to assist in making sound regulatory decisions.

The two groups said they expect to enhance the knowledge of materials development and behaviors, while increasing the capabilities that will aid regulatory agencies that classify, evaluate and monitor the safety and performance of new and existing products. The partnership is expected to generate polymer libraries in physical/structural properties; methods to characterize and predict solubility and degradation of polymers; and characterize the presence of bioactive bindings.

Further, the partnership will look at the short- and long-term durability of flexible implantable devices to determine how coatings impact medical device performance.
