Washington, D.C., is the fastest-growing place in the nation, according to the latest census estimates released Wednesday.
The population in D.C. increased 2.7 percent between April 2010 and July of this year, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated. This boom marks the first time D.C. has led the states in growth since the early 1940s.

?The nation?s overall growth rate is now at its lowest point since before the baby boom,? Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said in a statement.
After D.C., the next-fastest growing states in terms of percentage increase were Texas, Utah, Alaska, Colorado and North Dakota.
California is still the most populous state with 37.7 million, followed by Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois. Texas gained more people than any other state between April 2010 and July 2011, the census noted.
Meanwhile, the only three states to lose population were Rhode Island, Michigan and Maine.
