MSU All-American Jerel Worthy talks today; speculation is he's going to NFL

East Lansing? Michigan State junior defensive tackle Jerel Worthy has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and enter his name in April's NFL Draft.

Worthy made the announcement Thursday alongside Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio at the Clara Bell Smith Center on campus. Several of his teammates were in attendance, as well.

"I feel like the timing is right for me to pursue my dream," Worthy said. "I knew in my heart when we blocked that field goal against Georgia that it was the right time to go."

Worthy, an All-American this season, said last week that he would make a decision after Michigan State played in the Outback Bowl against Georgia. Against Georgia, Worthy had five tackles, including two for loss.

His potential draft status varies widely, depending on who is ranking the players.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper has Worthy ranked No. 21 overall while ESPN's Todd McShay does not have Worthy in his top 32. CBSSports.com has Worthy at No. 25 overall and the fourth-best defensive tackle.

Dantonio said he appreciated how Worthy kept the team as his first priority during preparation for the Outback Bowl and is in full support of Worthy's decision.

"The exciting part is I believe his best days as a player are still ahead of him," Dantonio said. "So I expect him to perform extremely well at the next level."
