SUVs are not the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road today, nobody can argue with that. As a general rule bigger vehicles have worst gas mileage ratings. For this reason, a lot of eco-concious consumers have turned to smaller and hybrid vehicles. However, some people genuinely need big vehicles that offer considerable towing capacity and in some cases can seat up to 8 people. The only type of vehicles that fit this description are full-size SUVs. In this article we are going to take a brief look at the three most fuel efficient SUVs that can seat 8 passengers.
First in our list is the Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid, a full size SUV with an impressive towing ability of 6200 pounds. It is equipped with a 6.0L V8 engine and two electric motors that produce a combined horsepower of 379hp. According to fueleconomy.gov the 2012 Tahoe hybrid has an estimated fuel efficiency of 20city/23highway.
Some of its main advantages are the ample room both for passengers and for cargo in the interior, the superior fuel efficiency for its class and the well designed interior. Nonetheless, it is not a cheap option as the MSRP of the only trim level starts at $51,970 which is about 10% more than the similarly equipped gas only Tahoe.Second in our list is the GMC Yukon hybrid. Of course this is no surprise since mechanically the Yukon is an identical twin of the Tahoe. It uses the exact same engine configuration and the same electrically variable transmission. As a result its fuel efficiency rating is 20city/23highway. The MSRP of the base model is $52,470, slightly higher than the Tahoe. According to most reviews the build quality of the cabin is excellent and it offers a smooth ride.
However, some note that the 3rd row seats are not well designed and that there are cheaper alternatives that can even offer more practicality than this full-size SUV. ?Last but not least is another vehicle by GM, the Cadillac Escalade hybrid. It is the most expensive option with a starting price of 73,850 and gets the exact same gas mileage as the other two SUVs in this list. The higher price tag is due to the luxury and the standard features it provides. The Escalade was and remain an iconic American vehicle that is synonymous to luxury. For many the improved fuel efficiency of the hybrid model is just an added bonus.
Although the fuel efficiency rating of the three aforementioned models is not impressive, especially when you compare them with other smaller hybrids they are the only hybrids that offer seating for 8 passengers and the ones with the highest towing capacities. So, for consumers that need these two features they are the ?greener? options. Of course, if someone doesn't necessarily need this features any of these three vehicles would be an overkill. There are other more fuel efficient and less expensive options like smaller hybrid SUVs, compact 4 cylinder SUVs or even better hybrid sedans and hatchbacks that get almost two times better gas mileage.
