Goodfellow Bros. is laying off about 100 people after a Maui mega-mall proposal was shot down by the Hawaii Land Use Commission late last week.

Goodfellow is the general contractor for the site work on the 700,000-square-foot retail project in Kihei, which included a housing component.

Steve Goodfellow, CEO of Goodfellow Bros., told PBN that they had started work on the project but put things on hold during the hearing process with the LUC.

Last Thursday, the LUC voted 6-3 against California-based Eclipse Development Group?s proposed project because it was not in compliance with the land reclassification ruling in 1995 received by the former owner.

Goodfellow has a total workforce of between 250 and 300, some of whom have been with the company for more than three decades.

The 100 people that will be out of a job are mostly operational engineers, laborers and other field workers.

?It?s just very disappointing,? Goodfellow said. ?We?re hoping that the developer and the state LUC can sit down and this can be remedied, [so] the project can proceed.?

He also noted that there may be hundreds of other construction jobs that will be lost because the mall project is at a standstill.

?Once the mall [would?ve] opened, [that?s] even more jobs [lost],? Goodfellow said.

Meantime, opponents of the project, who noted that it would add to traffic congestion and change the character of Kihei, called Thursday?s ruling a victory.
